All,
I am new to BMW an this forum. I have a 1996 328i that needs a new transmission. It currently has a a4s 270R but i found a used a4s 310R that I maybe able to use from a 1995 325i. Has anyone had any experience with this swap? I read that the only difference should be the planetary gear that is used in it. I just got a A1+B+C to be able to interface with the car and see what is going on with the error codes.
Thanks,

Kevin, you should post in the 5er section. I think Erich is the only one to surf all the boards here lol. Most of us just stick to the 5er board, you can post anything there.

I remember a similar thread http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showthread.php/44745-E36-a4s-270r-to-a4s-310r-swap-error
Basically, to avoid any problems, stick to the same trans, the same part number on the trans sticker, the same control unit.
whiskychaser might know more about these trans types.

Edit: I copied the thread from 3 series to 5 series forum, so your problem/question get's attention, but also check the one in 3 series

Abroad atm but will check when I get home. First thought is it will not work well due to tcm difference

Stronger transmission though. I don't understand why an improved trans wouldn't shut the light off. If I had to do it again I would just unplug the light and be done with it.

Just had a look at the wiring diagrams for the 325i and 328i. Unless I am suffering from jet lag, they don't look even close.

Correct, can't just swap controller things over.

From what I have read even if the trans swaps out there are adaptable sensors that will throw the code. Apparently they check band and friction wear and a different trans will keep that error going forever. So back to the idea of resetting the computer?

You can reset the pressure adaptation (as distinct from AGS features) with DIS. IIRC, you probably only need to do so if you change the trans, VB or software. I did it a few years ago when I changed boxes in the E34. Not sure it made any difference. Either that or it learned very quickly! It wasn't the box in question so maybe this isn't much of a bench mark
