After reading RICKMs post about the new and upcoming V-10 M5, I was curious to see what speed my ride( 535im) could achieve in 5 seconds. I praticed my counting to 5 accuracy several times and then made a few dead stop trails on the way home from work. At the 5 second mark, i just had been able to begin accelerating in 3rd gear at just over 50 mph. So the question to my self is: is approx 10 mph in 1 second worth an extra $75K. I will think it over in the next coming year.

And I bet a lot of folks who read this board would like to know how you have your 535 sorted so that it goes from 0-60 in 6 seconds? Or even 7?

joes,
0-60 is only about 5% of a car's worth
the other 95% is what u pay 75 large for =]
heheheh

I thought 535i 5-speeds did 0-60 in 7 seconds, bone stock?

I am not sure, but I would think something like the G-tech pro, or the Passport G-Timer would accuratly measure your 0 to 50 times. (In fact, I know from the ad photos that the Passport G-Timer does handle 0-50).
I've told my wife that I would like one of those device for my birthday, which is coming up in September. Perpahs I'll have more to report on it then.

I have a gtech pro. Have not tried to many runs in the BMW. You would be amazed how difficult it is sometimes to fing enough real estate to make a 0-60 run. It seems whenever I go out to do one, the traffic is horrific. Finding a spot to make a 1/4 mile run is a whole nother story.

I've got one coming in - I want to see how fast the wife's new Quest is ;)
We could start a lend-lease with it. Realistically, I'm not planning on making too many mods that I want to model. I do wantt o baseline my new car, and go back to back with the wife's best friend's G35 Coupe. Maybe keep it around long enough to model an intake? Hmmmm Maybe pulleys too.... And lighter wheels for winter, these 135's are big...... With a good launch on lighter wheels I'm probably looking at a few tenths.....
:p

I threw alot of money at it and time. It is just a big tinker toy to me. I have done everything that i can think of that is cost effective. The only thing left in my mind is a turbo, and I will not be going there. too much bling bling!

Allright, your Quest vs. my FX35 then.... ;)
I did some 0-60s in my 530iA a while back, 7 seconds flat as measured by the gTech. But that was with an EAT chip and 4.1 differential. That was with a conservative launch from idle - if I had wanted to be mean to the drivetrain, probably could've gotten that down a few tenths.

Roughly 7 secs for a manual 535 - my BMW buyer's guide (by Fred Larimer) is not the definitive source (in fact, it has the photos of the E34 525 and 530 reversed), but it probably quotes the factory on the following E34 manual-transmission times (auto tranny times are all about a second higher except the 540 is .5 higher):
525 - 8.6
535 - 7.6
M5 - 6.1
530 - 7.5
540 - 6.2

Probably depends ... abused...
Assume they abused them to the max to get the best possible times.

This time was basically verified by R&T when it tested the 535i/manual and found it to run 0-60 in 7.7sec; 1/4 mi in 15.9 sec. (R&T, 1/89). Not too bad for a heavy car...

I'm just a shade over 6 usually (around 6.2) since I don't want to be too hard on the clutch and I don't want to chuck the tranny into 2nd too hard/fast and roast the synchro. I think Mark's chip is good for 0.1 or 0.2, especially with the increased redline and more time spent in 1st...accel is pretty linear in the 4800-6800rpm range. I still like the high-speed roll-on power/accel these things have...life above 100mi/160km/h with no one else on the roads can be rewarding... Remember, drag racing is the "worst" aspect of these cars...(and still fairly respectable) :)

Duey, I'll bet you would find the chip is giving you much more than 0.2 seconds... the car mags beat those cars to hell to get the best times.
I did a genuine comparison of my EAT chip vs. stock -- same day, same temperature, same stretch of road, etc -- and if I recall correctly my gains were on the order of 0.7 or more. Different engine/trans etc than yours, of course, but I'd bet the results would be similar.

Mike, I'll be setting up my G-Tech and trying it out now that I just got it (G-Tech Pro). You may be right....my 540i six-shooter sure hits 60mph PDQ! :p

OK, further to my last...I got a GTech-rated best of 5.8 seconds out of the beastie with a bit of wheel chirp and ASC+T disabled (I find it sometimes thinks a slipping clutch at high RPM is a wheel slip thing). I have to say though, I felt like I was abusing the clutch and the whole machine by doing max-effort launches...although there was no nasty burning clutch smell... :p
Unfortunately, I have yet to find a nice strip of black top to get a good 1/4mi and I'm still working on calibrating the GTech to make sure that times and HP estimites are accurate.
Cheers,
Duey

I've been in the E39 M5 and E34 535i before and there is no comparison between newer M5 and 535i. There are fast cars and there are very fast cars. M5 is a very fast car. It smoked a 2001 Corvette and the guy in the Vette couldn't believe it. I don't know where you got the 1 second difference to 60 mph but seem like day and night difference in speed between the two. I'm sure the V10 has even more kick. If I had the money, I would easily make the purchase.

6.1 seconds for M5. That must be for E34 M5. E39 M5 (V8) does 0-60 mph is 4.6 seconds. That's a world apart from 7.6 seconds.

We're a little behind the times around here. Plus, most of us are comfortable, but not wealthy (I hear the Z8, Enzo and a few others are even faster than that!).
E39 M5 does 0-60 mph is 4.6 seconds.

4.6, hmmm, I wonder if I could hit that in the MR2 with the new turbo, crank scraper and head/manifold porting..... hmmm, soon as I get the rest of the kinks out, I'll give it a try. 17psi with the ceramic turbine wheel is fast.
Probably more like 4.9, seeing as to how I want to keep the trans and axles for a while longer.... ;) but we'll see in a a week or 2.
