Vanos

I am new to all this BMW thing and am just wondering what this Vanos unit is. I have got a 520i with the M50 engine and have been told that there is a vanos or non-vannos in it. how can i tell and what does it look like. Has anyone got any pictures so i can see or is there anywhere i can look.

Check the front of your valve cover. If there is a small bump sticking out on the intake side-you have vanos. If it is a flat metal then you don't have it. Sorry I don't have a picture.
