stuck odometer

i have an 89' european spec 525i and my odometer has been stuck at 299,996 kilometers since i have owned it. i have heard that this is a common problem with these years and was wondering if anyone has had this problem and/or fixed it? i am leaning towards a new "coding" plug, but before i spend the $ i'd like any input. thanks

mine says "sae 06" so I guess im exempt from the whole deal? I dont even want to think of that dreded operation, id do the R&R of the coding plug tho.

for the info , i guess i'll be replacing the coding plug and bypass all of the techno-wizardry.
