Well, I ignored my instincts to leave well enough alone...I think I fried my headunit (the infrared model used in late E30s). It's an Alpine CM5908, and I really like it, so I'm on the hunt for a replacement. I believe it was also used on early E34 and E32 models. Anyone have one sitting around, gathering dust? Probably the best feature on it for me is the weather band...

Thanks,
Bill B.

Shorting + and -...X-acto and back in business. Except the static is still there on the right channel. And I finally realized that the right front speaker hasn't been playing in a while. I thought it was because the speaker was shot, but turns out that channel is shot on the head unit...

Maybe one of the auctions will come through for me!

Thanks guys,
Bill B.

To check the channel operation on the head unit, simply switch the speaker wires around. If it's the speaker, you'll still hear static, if it's the channel in the head unit, it will move to the different speaker location.

Good luck with your auction, you might even be able to resolder some capacitors onto your old radio board. I was able to fix the MB like that. The little buggers leak out, look for a darker color around the area of the capacitors on the green part of the board. Usually around the plug in areas of the board, or amp part of the board. You'll need a magnifying glass to check for leaks and identify the capacitors. And if you're really up for a challenge, you can try to solder them in yourself, if you've got the right tools, or take it to an electronics repair and tell them to do it.

Good luck Bill....
