i am thinking about building a peecee with a amd 3200 and ether a asus K8V-SE deluxe or a A7N8X-E deluxe, i am leaning towards the k8, i can beat the local best price by at least $100 for a 3200 cpu/a7 mb combo on ebay and save another $100 on a ati 9800 pro on ebay. best combo $ on k8/3200 i've found $345 and $218 for a7/3200 give or take a few bucks for buy it now or regular auction, is that as good as it gets?

I usually go to www.mwave.com (http://www.mwave.com) I mean you can go ebay, but if your buying new why not go with a reputable dealer just in case there is a problem.

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe is $86 but can only handle up to Athlon XP 3000
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-478&depa=1
you can also get a refurb one for $50

As for the processor, I would never spend over $100 for the processor... it is just a waste of money and it is not that noticeble to you on the speed... it is the video card, amount of RAM and how fast your HDD and controller that makes all the difference.
You also have to decide on your mobo... why spend all that money into CPU when you mobo is limited to the maximum Athlon XP speed of 3200 I think... when everyone is going the Athlon 64 route?
Check with pricewatch.com, pricegrabber.com or nextag.com for components... you gotta watch out that shipping cost... sometime it is way cheaper to just buy the stuff from one place.
Computergate.com is also another place to shop... at least their shipping is resonable.

winfred, for the past 2 weeks, i've been working as temporary maintainence help at my apartment complex. in trashing out one of the apartments (stuff people leave behind when their asses are too lazy to value money), someone left behind a never installed asus a7n8x-e motherboard, nvidia gforce, and amd processor. unfortunately, one of the other vultures took the processor and v card, but forgot about the MOBO. i don't particularly care for amd, and wouldn't buy one of their processors because of their unacceptable attitude about heat output and chip survivability. if you'd like the mobo, you can have it gratis, for all the money you've saved me. i obviously can't guarantee it, and don't have a >1ghz chip from amd to put in and test it, but, like i said, its never been installed, just opened and taken out of the computer kondom antistatic bag. if you could borrow a amd from somebody to try it out, i'm sure it would work, as it is able to start a powersupply (so it looks ok functionally). if you're not interested, ill just keep it around long enough so thatt somebody throws away a >1ghz unit to try it out :)

Winfred,
Just built my sister a PC for her birthday.
AMD 3200+
1GB Kingston DDR400
160GB SATA
Lite-On DVDRW
Pioneer Slot-DVD
Epox 8RDA3+ motherboard
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX
ATI Radeon X800 Pro (mmm)
Viewsonic 17" LCD
Logitech Z-680 5.1 speakers...
It runs Doom 3 VERY NICELY... I think that's what you're going for ;)
All for under $2,000 with case, PSU, etc

I have an extra AMD 1800+ XP if anyone needs... 1.53GHz
