my '95 525ia has been serviced every 30k since new...now at 120k and needing it again.

I just serviced it myself.

New filter kit. I would get the one from BMA. I got one from auto parts store but it did not include the sump pump gasket.

I ended up getting the needed gasket from dealer for 20 something (comes with new bolts).

It has the exact same transmission as both of my 1991 525i's and they certainly aren't sealed. The only difference is that mine do have a dipstick.

I know that many well meaning BMW people call all of these trannys sealed, but that is really a very bad description. It causes many owners to think that because their trannys are "sealed" they never have to change the fluid, and that is totally wrong. These trannys use a non-synthetic Dexron fluid that needs to be changed every 30,000 miles or so to be safe.

The only E34 auto trannys that I would ever call sealed, and they really aren't, are those in the 540's because they use a special BMW synthetic fluid that is very long lasting. BMW mistakenly calls this fluid "lifetime", which it isn't, but it will last 80,000 miles or so before it needs changing.

There is nothing about the 525i GM trannys that should cause the word sealed to be used to describe them, but so many people still call them that.

Sorry about the rant, this is simply one of the topics about our cars that really tends to set me off. I hear too many owners talk about never needing to change their tranny fluid because they are "sealed".

Thanks to all.......I am working on a 1995 525i. My car is a 91 525i. I just recently had my Trans replaced after the original could not be rebuilt. Mine with the 218358 miles on it, finally cooked. Several hard parts were chewed up and really not worth the hunt for new ones. So I purchased a core out of Florida for $550.00. They guaranteed it rebuild able....so I had it rebuilt by K and W Trans in Dallas for $650.00. The original case had a dip stick/filler tube.....the replacement Trans...Does not. Before I stabbed it in I thought I'd check.....Thanks to ALL!

Being that the trans that was put into the car from the factory had a dip stick...and the replacement trans does not.....the fill hole, that is the left hand side bolt, driver's side for US cars, correct? Once filled, the fluid should be at the botton edge of the hole....? (where is the DME relay BTW?)
