is there a way (without buying a specialized device) to see why my 93 740's "check engine" light came on this morning? like a series of things i can do to make it display an error code on the display maybe?

Here is a good thread on the issue. (http://www.bimmer.info/forum/showthread.php?t=5797&highlight=stomp)
More details on the stomping part. (http://www.bimmer.info/forum/showthread.php?t=5858&highlight=stomp)
Winfred's essential comment on this procedure (made in a different thread) was that you have to do the stomping within five seconds of turning the ignition to position 2.
