Help, car failed smog

@15mph (1615rpm) HC was 119 while allowable is 102. NO was a bit high too 694 (allowed 748. At 25 mph however, passes with flying colors.

Hi,

Tiger has a point. The logic is as follows: engine oil typically gets contaminated with hydrocarbons as a result of piston blow-by, etc. (part of the reason one changes it). At idle, with high manifold vacuum, the hydrocarbons tend to get sucked back out, showing up in the tailpipe.

Give it a try.

Make sure the car is run hard just before the test. Be sure to get the cat hot. Change oil and filters (air and oil). New plugs might not hurt either. Put some alcohol in the tank.

Bill R. advised someone with same situation like you... just barely missed the smog... he changed the oil and went to inspection again and passed.

Intresting, would changing the oil help me lower my NO emissions at 15mph?

it should help in any low rpm high vacuum situation by getting rid of the combustion by products that have diluted the oil and are slipping past the rings

That makes sense, my NO and CO are way below average at 25 mph(1808rpm). How significant do you think the change will be once I change the oil. In addition to an oil change, do you think I should buy one the of those cans that gurantee you to pass smog?

i am not sure about the only emisions stuff they do around here so far is pressure test the gas cap, and if you have a obdII car make sure that theres no ce codes and that the codes have not been reset with in the last couple weeks, so i am not versed in emisions testing

I've heard of some liquid you pour in your gas tank thats supposed to make you pass smog. You might want to look into that
