Hi everybody I'm new to the website and I have limited knowledge of my BMW's workings.

I drive a 525i auto 1993.

Occasionally the transmission emits a "boom" and then "bing" up comes the message on the dash "TRANS PROGRAM-CONSULT OWNERS HANDBOOK".

Trans. locks in what seems like top gear and unless immediately I stop to allow some cooling down then it remains this way until journeys end.....next day/weeks all is well.

I can drive for weeks; and do a regular 600mile round trip Darlington/Bristol and then "Boom,Bing" it happens again.

In fear of getting "ripped off" can anyone suggest other things that should be checked first before taking out a second mortgage to pay for a transmission rebuild! :(

Appreciate any suggestions.

Dodgybob-Darlo' :)

I don't know much about the automatics, but I know the first place to go when you have trouble is http://www.bmwe34.net :)

he works as a getrag distributer, he can lead you in the right direction even if you need to buy a rebuilt from him. He saved me from buying a transmission one time by a simple phone call.

Geed Luck!

I had that problem about a year ago. For me it ended up being a bad battery.
replaced it and haven't had any problems since.
I would read Bruno's site and check the things he says check first. Being a member of the board for about 2yrs now I have seen many post on the Trans Program message and there are many different causes so check the little things first.
The first response from some would be that you need a new tranny but thats not always the case.

Bob,

As you will see from the notes on-line a good place to start is to do a service on the transmission then have a competent person check all the sensors. Given that it is an intermittent fault, my money is on the sensors. They will need a copy of the electrical plans which can be found in Bentley's.

Hope this helps,

Or is it still coming up? You guys always have great times to report, and we expect nothing less from this year's get together. :p Didn't you have the "beer in the rowboat" adventure last year? :D

Brian,

Springfest Down Under 2004 is Sunday week. We have yet to cause chaos and commotion! A few of the likely culprits won't be there and no crossing of water for lack of beer is anticiapted. The route wer'e taking should make for a nice drive and there should be plenty of opportunities to socialise. And a report will be forthcoming! :)

Cheers Geoff,

Don't suppose the electrical plans can be found on a website somewhere?

Will look for a used Bentleys on Amazon or ebay in the meantime.

Really difficult to find a reputable garage to diagnose the problem without the fear of getting ripped off in the Arctic waste of the North East of England.

Thanks again mate.

if you are in europe, please keep in mind that you probably need "plans" for a zf 5hp18 transmission. the gm 4l30e or a4s 310r transmission was used in N. american cars, the NA 530i model uses the 5hp18 transmission. JIC someone tries to help you by copying TIS diagrams or such.

Bob,

Avoid your local garage as they won't know where to start. The Bentley's is worth the money. If you can't get one, drop me a line and I will see what I can do. Also to find a local person in your area check out the ads in BMW Car and Toal BMW magazines who are both produced in the UK.
