Dynoed my e34 535i

I did a dyno run on my '91 535i today, what do you guys think of the result?

The amount of drivetrain loss surprised me, I was expecting more hp at the wheels. The operator told me it might be the tires and the way the car was strapped to the dyno.

The operator also told me that the car was almost running lean. The car has been fitted with a performance chip by SJK-Digital but I can't find any info about it with Google, so I'm assuming it's not that good. Maybe I should go for a EAT chip?

If I read the graph correctly they measure about 224HP engine power, which if correct, means your performance chip is increasing horsepower and would seem about right for a chip. I wonder how they measure that or if they use some sort of correction factor based on the wheel horsepower?

My car with just a BavAuto chip made 180rwhp/195rwtq (ft-lbs) for reference.

You are not in the US. I wouldn't automatically assume EAT chip would be any better. In fact, its my understanding that EAT chips are *tuned* for US/North American-equipped cars. Cars outside of the US may have different equipment, like catalytic converters to meet emission requirements, and may not be compatible. If you are serious about replacing your chip, you really should contact EAT first to make sure he can make one for your car!

I think it put down around 173 hp at the rear wheels.

Turbo added 100 hp to that number!

Craig: Hmm, interesting.. I'll have to consider the BavAuto chip too.

bfd: Actually I've already emailed D'Sylva and I got a response in 3 minutes! I immediately sent him another email but he hasn't replied for two weeks :( But I've heard of other people here in Finland using EAT chips without problems. The DME box number is the same as on US cars and furthermore the car's got a catalytic converter and a O2 sensor. So I'm assuming the EAT chip would work. Hopefully he'll get around to answering my mails soon..

So, what about the drivetrain loss? Is ~30% normal in an E34?

30% is high, in general most cars lose 15-20% or so. When I say most cars, I'm talking about cars other than BMW as well.

he may be able to custom design a chip for your octane, etc.
