rear window defogger

can anyone help? I have a 1994 540i my rear window defogger is not working, I have checked the fuse and it is fine, I am not sure what to do.

Undo the rear quarter trim on the RHS and see if a meter records voltage at the contacts when the engine is running and the rear window switched on. This ought to help explain where the problem is. If you have 12v there, it must be a break in the window element itself or a poor earth.
