Worng ECU?????

hey there, had my car looked at today, ive been havin a few problems, the engine seems to splutter when driving, Its also gettin harder to start, takes an accelerator push to get it to fire. it idles fine when running. The mechanic said it could be a faulty or incorrect ECU. The details of the ECU are:

1722269001
WBAHC12090
3430327
A09E

The engine is a 2.5i M20 NON-Vanos.
Can any of you folks tell me if it is the correct ECU?
If so, can an ECU be reprogrammed(fixed)?

Yes that is the correct ECU. BTW, all M20's are non-VANOS.
Did he check the coil, distributor, rotor, wires etc?
