has anyone with an e34 540 installed a performance chip and dyno'd their car? I am looking for a chip and was wondering what the gains are from the different brands.

I don't know what other brands are like, but there was a rash of buys and raves for Mark D'Sylva's EAT Ultrachip (we did a group buy a few months back):

I have one in my 540iA, and there was a moderate but noticeable change in the engine's behavior after the install. A little bit quicker on the low end of the tach. I definitely think it was worth it; I now also get 25mpg on the highway (city is about the same, 15.5-16.5 depending on the weather and my driving mood). By now, though, I can't really remember what the car was like with the stock chip.
At that point his chips were cheaper; they're $200 now.
I installed Mark's EAT chip in my 540iA, replacing a Jim Conforti chip. Big difference! Mark's chip gave me the low end kick I needed. Mileage was similar to Andyman's: 26mpg highway, 15.9-17.0 mixed city/burb driving.
Get the EAT chip. It's the best bang for your buck. It's easy to install. If you can install a video card in a computer, you can install the chip.

I tried to tell you this, now maybe you'll believe me, muuuuuuch smoother!
Also, I dynoed my car at EDGE and it ran 218, 222 and 226, torque was @
236, 225 & 227.
I never did have it done before the chip (damn it) but I agree with MBXB & andyman32 assesments.

what about other brands guys! i need solid #'s (thanks again keith)
ME,
I went from stock chip, to Dinan, to Conforti, then EAT.
The EAT chip beats the rest.

I haven't dyno'd mine but I did G-Tech it and get about 255-260 rwhp. Using 15% driveline losses as a rough rule of thumb, I figure there is around 300-310 at the flywheel...

the new big question! does the dsylva chip disable EWS-II?
ME, my 95 was actually an OCT 94 car so it's not EWS-II equipped. I think Mark was working on some EWS-II chips but I don't think that included an M60B40 from late 95 production. He'd be a better one to ask for EWS-II speciffic Q's...
Cheers
