View Full Version : emoval help... trying to finish head hasket work
Im putting on the finishing touches to my 535i and am almost ready to install the new head and gasket. I ordered the complete gasket set from BMA, and am trying to remove the upper timing chain cover seal which came with the gasket set (Its approximately a 1 1/2 inch diameter brown piece that holds the oil out of the camshaft timing- which connects to the plug wires, rotor, etc). I just cannot seem to remove it-- I've tried twisting it, hammering it- but it won't budge. Unfortunately now I've ruined the seal... can anyone offer a suggestion on this?
Also- Is there any special sealants or anti-seize components to buy before I put the gaskets and engine head back on?
Thanks so much!

This type of puller should be tiny enough to get behind the seal. Lube the new seal to get it between the cam & head.

The machinist replaced my seal when working the head & the cam out. It is gonna be tight with the cam in there, I'm sure. I've found that these type of seals, like a free inner space for fitting squarely.
My seal puller looks like this:

On the head gasket, don't put any type of gasket prep between the head & gasket as the aluminum head will want to expand on its own. My machinist recommended gaskacinch between the block & gasket.

make sure there is no dirt/oil/antifreeze in the bolt holes or you will get wrong torque readings and could crack around the holes in the block.
Thanks everyone... tommorow is my big day of head gasket installation! I can't wait for the car to be up and running again (its been out for over a year). Hopefully it all goes smooth. This board is awesome- thanks to everyone!
