Ok heres the deal: I have a 2000 528. I have decided that I want to get another set of wheels and tires for the winter. I found a used set of 2005 bmw 5-series alloy wheels, and I bought them. The original wheels of mine are marked 7Jx16H2 and the same imprint is found on the new (2005) wheels. The bolt pattern is the same, they are the same height and width. The problem is that when I tried to mount the wheels today, it appears as if the inner-most hub inside dimension of the new wheels is smaller by fractions of an inch. I am able to fit the new wheel onto the car hub, but it doesn't fit all the way, meaning there is a gap of about 1/8" between the wheel and the brake rotor.
Can somebody please tell me for sure if the new model 5 series has a different center hub dimension????????? I really need to figure this out its driving me crazy........Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

In case it makes any difference- the Original wheels are BBS BMW style #8, and the new wheels are BMW style #134...............

this sounds like a case for hubcentric rings or spacers. i didn't read the thread too
closely though since the e39's aren't my cup of tea

will surely be able to tell you the hub id of the 2005 wheels The e39 has a diameter of 74mm( i think its 74.1mm actually) and it sounds like the 2005 is smaller

thanks for the replies.....I am going to measure the inside diameter of each wheel tomorrow with a micrometer, and I willl post what I find out, but I am pretty much convinced (and pissed about) that the new 2005 model has a slightly smaller hub.............

They probably went back to normal sizes as with all other BMW... only E39 had the bigger hub.

that's about right, damn engineering bastards change the hub size that's been the same size from almost the 70s then change it again for the new model, how much ya bet that they made it 72.5 again from the e39s 74mm. like volvo with the 850, they spent 13 ****ing years designing that turd and introduced it in 93 and ill be damned if they didn't change atleast 50% of the car for 94 including going from 4 to 5 lug wheels (5 lug has been a volvo standred since the 60s usually the same offset and pattern)

It was Volvo's first entirely new platform since they began making cars (basically) - it was a bastard child. Don't buy one. :)
As for hub sizes - if it don't fit, it don't fit. There's a chance a machine shop could bore out the hole to the correct size, but don't count on it.
Sorry, man.

imho it's still a rolling pile of **** even worse in the 70 series, not even a good wart on the ass of a 2/7/940

well I measured the inside diameter of the new style 138 wheel, and it is 60 thousanths smaller in diameter than the original #8s that are on it. Since I got such a good deal on these wheels, and since I have access to the equipment, I am going to put the new wheels on a large diameter metal lathe and machine the inside diameter of the wheel to fit my hub (take off 30 thousanths along the entire circumference) ......I will take pics after I get them fitted on the car- and I bet I will be one of the only 2000's with new 5 series rims................ :D

How about E34 with that 2005 BMW wheels... I think that is pretty awesome wheel to go with E34... However, I didn't find a cheap set.

As Tiger refered to in one of his posts...the 5/6/7/8 series BMWs all have a 72.5mm wheel hub except the e39 5 series with its 74.1mm wheel hub. (yes, this includes the new 5/6/7 series, too) It is possible to mount the e39 5 series wheels on the other cars with a hub-centric reducing ring available at places like TireRack.com or DiscountTireDirect.com...but going the other way is more complicated and requires getting around the larger hub of the e39.
Here's a link that gives all of the wheel offsets, hub diameters, and bolt patterns: http://www.mynetcologne.de/~nc-tataryu/allgemeine%20daten.htm#bmw
