Can anyone confirm the total number of 540i/6 sp's. produced for the U.S. market in 1995? I know some were M sport and some not, and I am interested in the total number.
Does anyone know if the 6-sp was used in any other BMW models? In other words, if I am looking for a used tranny, or parts, do I have only the 1995 540's to look for? Do the e39 540's use the same tranny?
Thanks.

If there were any 840's in the US with a 6-speed, I bet that would be the same tranny. No actual knowledge there, though, sorry! That would be about it other than the E39 540s....I think those are the same too, but again I don't know for sure.

Hi,
I think the number is around 1280 cars (non-M-sport, just 540i 6-speeds). I don't know who carries parts for the Getrag tranny. Fun cars, aren't they?

but the e-39 540 uses the same 6-speed. The automatic to manual conversion requires a new pedal assembly, clutch hydraulics, flywheel, clutch pack and release bearing, shifter, console top, transmission support and mounts, guibo, driveshaft, rear engine water manifold, and miscellaneous hardware. You may want to consider a lightened aluminum flywheel (you still need the 34 pound steel one so that the starter ring-gear can be swapped onto the new one), UUC or Auto Solutions shifter, and an M 5 clutch. The coding plug on the instrument console willl need to be re-flashed, and you may do better with a DME chip specifically made for the 6-speed.
