Heated exterior mirrors question

Hi to everyone

Just installed a pair of M3 style exterior mirrors which got the heated element in it.

Should the mirrors be always hot when engine is running and when when ignition is on. I did not have heated mirrors previously and am a bit confused about its operation.

My 92 with inclement weather package has heated mirrors... they are on all the time. This is their standard operating mode.

Yup, they go on with the ignition (technically after the engine starts.)
