Hi all. I just got a set of soft 5 sporke rim from a 540I 97/03 BIMMER. I put it in a 525i 1989. can anyone tell me what is the bigger tire i can put in the rear! In the front i got 205/60/16. I'd love to put 245/50/16, but i think it will be to big. Please help me with this.. thanks

Areito, with a 9" x 16" wheel with a 22mm back-spacing, you can at least put a 255/45-16. I have 255/40-17's on the rear with a 9x17 ET22 (mm backspacing) wheel. Some guys even get 265's on but that's probably cutting things close.

Cheers,
Duey

Duey, thanks alot for the info. I will get the space 22mm and get 255/45/16 tire. I'm sure it is going to look and feel good driving. thank you again.. Francisco (bronx,NY)

Areito, just to be clear so you don't have any problems with the wheel, I should have said "OFFSET" not "back-spacing". 22mm offset means that the surface of the wheel's inner mounting pad is 'offset' 22mm outwards (towards the outside of the car) from the wheel's physical centerline. This is a much smaller number than the "back-spacing" or the distance from the wheel inner mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel.

My 9" wheel (inner bead measurement) is actually 10" wide as measured from the outer edges of the wheel. That's 254mm. My wheels are +22mm offset, or ET22. Exact midpoint of the wheel would be 254/2 = 127mm. Add the +22mm offset and you get 149mm between mounting surface and the inboard edge of the wheel, it's "back-spacing". I actualyl measured 150mm, but that's close enough to 149mm to let me know I'm doing the calculations correctly.

So, for your 255/45-16 tires, you will want a 9"x16" rim that measures ~150mm or ~5 7/8" from inner mounting surface to the back edge of the rim.
