ive been reading a lot of oil questions in different places. it seems that 10w-30 is best except in 'arctic' climates.

in these cars 0w-30 would be good choice.

it seems for my 530 that the o-40 seems 'smoother' in some way, but probably my imagination.

which covers a broader spectrum.

People still seem to be under the old assumption that you have to run a higher weight oil here due to the ambient temperatures. With modern day synthetics thats no longer true. The numbers on the mobil one synthetic simply mean that at 32F it pours like a 0 weight , so it doesn't thicken up like molasses when its cold. Cold thick oil takes longer for the oil pump to suck it up and get to the bearings to lubricate them when you first start it up, so on cold startup up with a thicker oil you're far more likely to cause harm to the engine bearings and more rapid wear from oil starvation. The second number 40 indicates that the oil doesn't get any thinner than a 40 weight straight weight oil when heated to 212F which is a little higher than normal operating temperature for engine oil. So that tells you that it pours as easily as a 0 weight when cold so the engine gets oil quickly but stays as thick as a 40 weight when hot for protection at operating temps. Also the regular dino oils when heated above this 212F point start to drop off in thickness quickly their flashpoint is much lower whereas the synthetic maintains its thickness and has a much higher flashpoint , so in hard driving on a hot day in phoenix you have better engine protection and less wear.
