i'm thinking about getting rid of my dual mass flywheel.
have any of you done it?

i've heard of people swapping an e28 flywheel in, and i've
heard of others swapping an m5 one in.

i'm basically looking for a lot less mass to spin around.

i've never done this but is my theory at least sound?

lighter flywheel = more rev happy engine, easier to match
revs, and better squirt....
neg - more revs to start off / prevent stalling

A few of us have put the earlier e28 flywheels behind the m30. It is a good upgrade & quiet; there is no rattle at shutdown. I had my flywheel turned down to 15 pounds. The stock dual mass flywheel weighs 32 pounds; the stock e28 flywheel weighs 22 pounds. The lighter flywheel makes for a noticeably quicker throttle.

I put a stock e28 flywheel in my e32 when I did the auto-to-manual swap, don't know what the dual mass feels like. No problems feathering the clutch at a stop & the e32 has another 300 lbs over an e34. It behaves quite nicely in fact, even up at a stop going up significant hills. To do it again I'd either lighten it or use an e12 flywheel. Can anyone confirm the e28 disk & pressure plate will bolt directly onto an e12 flywheel?

The only downside to a non-dual-mass setup is the driveshaft/drivetrain will go into spastic harmonics with the cruise set below 45 mph when in 4th or 5th, other than that, it's very smooth.

u shouldn't be in 4th or 5th at 45mph anyway =] heheh

I have an e28 setup. Been running it for about 3 years now without issue. Do you get your weird harmonics if you run 45 without the cruise in 4th or 5th gear? I would guess the problem is not with the clutch but something in the cruise control system.

me? no....i'm thinking about getting my dual mass swapped out

are there any write ups for the conversion?
*goes to check bruno's site*

also no 1 has put the m5 flywheel in a 535i?

I replaced the rear main seal when swapping flywheels. Also, get a new pivot point for the arm & throwout bearing with the new clutch.

Unless you have a very modified 535i or have a passion for hole shots - the e28 clutch/flywheel is more than adequate for even spirited driving. To the best of my knowledge the clutches are both 240mm the only difference being the clamping force on the clutch disc.

thanks everyone
the reason i mentioned teh m5 clutch is that's what
the guys in FL (the ones with the turbo 535i)
said that the m5 one is like 500 bucks....
which isn't too bad at all =]

but yeah i don't need the extra grabbiness just yet...

so basically, call bma tell em to send me
an e28 clutch, pivot point for the arm & throwout bearing?
then have my indy screw it in?
