i have the cluster dated 02/89 and its white back, where is the coding plug on this unit? - i cant see it on the back of the unit

If you have a cluster with the check control display on it, you should find it not too far from the centre of the back of the cluster. It should be brown and will probably be secured in with a white latch.
I've never had a close look at how clusters without check control work.

You can look up the instrument cluster diagram to get an idea of where the code plug is located: www.realoem.com/bmw
Just enter the last 7 digits of your VIN (or look it up generically by selecting the correct buttons). The instrument cluster is in (main group) 62 INSTRUMENTS/MEASURING SYSTEMS (sub group) 62 05 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER...then scroll down to the correct diagram and click on it...it will open up into an exploded diagram with a part number index below. ;)
