and turn the key ALL the way and it should unlock, we'll deal with the drivers side after you get in.

or the microswitch out of order. Provided that the E34 doors are of same or similar design as the E32, I can tell you a little trick how to open the door without breaking anything.
Open the rear door behind rivers door wide.
Use a torch and look between the rear door and the B-pillar. There you can see the edge of the front door. There is a small rubber plug in the front door at the same height as the door handle. Remove this and then you see the slide which holds the door handle from inside.

Push this slide forward so that the door handle is released. Then you can remove from the outside the door handle of the front door.
Then use the torch again and you will see the doorlock system. Try from the outside with a srewdriver to release the doorlock.
Works on the E32, I hope also on the E34.

Further details how the doorlock looks etc. are on Johan's E32 page

which is moving with a good non-dripping grease. I use grease for motor bike drive chains. This also helps in winter time that the mechanism gets frozen when car is parked outside. After that don't install the door panel, just actuate the lock several time so that the grease goes inside the moving parts. Then try again and when it works attach the doorpanel again.

In the attachment is the explosion drawing. Unfortunately you have not in your profile year built/engine/manual or automatic etc. which would help much in future to answer questions. Maybe you add these items to your profile.
