Is a 557 a real BMW?

I saw a maroon colored "557" (that's what the tag said) on the highway on Xmas eve. It was the body style that came after the e34 but before the current design. Does that mean a 5.7 L engine? I got a good look at it in bumper to bumper traffic in Phoenix, AZ, so I know I wasn't seeing things. Other than the tag, it looked like a 540i.

Anybody ever heard of this?

no its not a custom badge
i saw pics of it, and the invoice.
its a custom one off job by bmw
and delivered to some special "friend"
of thiers (by friend i mean some guy
who has a lotta money)

it was later sold to a lucky fellow
at an auction..

its a WICKED fast car.
