My 95 V8 Nikasil with 89,000 miles idles poorly and failed a leakdown test with and average of around 23% leakage.
I could clearly hear air hissing through the crankcase oil fill hole.
After reading everything I could find about the Nikasil issue I'm checking with local machine shops for quotes on boring out my cylinders and installing sleeves. I don't want to spring for a used or rebuilt engine.
I plan on removing the block myself this winter while I have the car stored in my garage.
Do any of you guys know of anyone how has done this to their car?
Anyone think this is a bad idea?
Any suggestions? What problems during disassembly?
Chuck

mann, there are so many totaled 4 litre BMWs it will be cheaper to get a used one. There is NO WAY I would spring for sleves and pistons/balancing the assembly etc etc etc etc etc...before I would pop in a used engine. A decent used engine with good maintenance gets 300k on the clock, why bother with a rebuild that might just squeek 100k?

PS sell me your old one when you get a new one so I can pop it into my 530.

right on brother!
hunt down a transplant.
OR...
bitch and scream and kick and fuss so much that BMWNA agrees to cover all or part of the cost.
they do not want to lose a BMW customer if they can help it and will probably do more than you may think.
