from the resonator back the mufflers are generally the same size on usa e32/34, the main difference between them are pipe diameter on the e32/34 and the length of the pipes infront of the resonator that connect to the cat on the e32 (i and il are different lengths il is longer then i which is longer then e34) i cut the flanges off of the stock 535 resonator and after cutting 8 or so inches off (you gotta measure to get the system in the right place) of the e32 750il pipes infront of the resonator i welded the 535's to the 750 so it would bolt up to the stock 535 cat. e32 750il catback's are 2.5 inch pipe e32 740il are 2.25 inch pipe but they don't have the cool square tips, i think the stock 535 pipes are 1.75 inch

Winfred ,
I'm sorry but u can call it my lack of knowledge "catback" ???, did u replace just the rear muffler the one which has the exhaust tips on the end or the whole exhaust line from the engine manifold to the exhaust tips.
I had a very loud rattle from my exhaust and a loud bang whenever I released the gas pedal at a medium to high rpm range and had set myself to do this as soon as I first test-drove my vehicle, I had it done 3 days ago the whole thing from central silencer to the rear muffler (the pic for the same is on a realoem parts page click here (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GB81&mospid=47352&btnr=18_0146&hg=18&fg=20) for the same) I managed to get 1 out from an E32 '89 750i from a scrap dealer I know who imports half-cut and complete (really clean) cars from Japan. The part looks almost new and after replacement I feel a definite improvement in power and a much sweeter sound when I push it hard and a near dead-silent idle.
Thanks,
Ali

catback refers to 2 and 3, generally everything from the converter to the back of the car
Thanks winfred sorry I didn't get the time to come online sooner, I notice a considerable difference in power would this have been because the previous catback was rusted and probably blocked or does installing a bigger catback really add to it, one thing I'm sure about its really made the car quieter at idle, by the way the one I put on does not have the square tips like I've seen in ur pics, just regular ones only bigger than my previous.

your old unit was probably blocked and restricting flow
Thanks Winfred,
One more thing I've tried asking this before but cannot seem to find a simple answer my 525i been giving me terrible gas mileage approx 80 litres or 20 US gallons for a full tank which lasts for a grand total of 380 kilometres (close to 235 miles), are these V6 525s typically this thirsty or is there a major fault in the one I've bought, I've heard a lot of people have similar problems because of oxygen sensors but apparently mine never came with one,
not necessarily :cars sold in markets with leaded petrol ie 1990 the uk,australia and new zealand for starters had leaded petrol so cars came without cats or o2 sensors just runs on a preprogrammed map
Have had the first routine maintenance tuneup done after I bought it consisting of engine oil n filter, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, wheel alignment n balancing. Did i miss anything which might improve my gas mileage.
Mark D,
I was thinking of getting an EAT chip for my car and I thought since my car's already got a preprogrammed map for the DME and does not rely on the O2 sensor for feedback won't it support a more aggressive map than the ones u put in thechips for the US or Japan spec E34s which did come with cats n O2 sensors, tell me u can make some sort of sense from this last line or have I got the concept wrong.
Thanks guys,
Ali
