have a NIKASIL engine but a seriously fast car,I am sure the 540 / 6 lovers and haters will chime in.There are lots of posts on this. The 540 probably will use less gas than your 535 too!

Grave, I was looking through my files for full-on engine pics and I don't actually have any...got close ups of some bits here and there...

Here's a pic of the whole assembly out in your living room for spring cleaning...

...and here's what it looks like under the hood...

(click here (http://www.kindel.com/bmw/540i%20Sport%20Motor%205.jpg) for a HONKING BIG pics of an M60B40 (4.0L) engine)

The 540i/6 is a seriously fun car...they are especially awesome when chipped. Although not quite at M5 levels (either engine or suspension) they are not too bad. My research has indicated that the 540i/6 (a.k.a. 540i with "Sports Package") came with 6-speed, Recaro seats, and M-technic suspension, although they are sometimes confused with the US/Cdn-spec 540i M-Sport/M540i's (http://www.kindel.com/bmw/how_to_identify.htm). I have not heard of a 1995 540i with sports package and an auto transmission but I have learned to "never say never"...except of course, when you are saying "never say never"...then it's ok to say never.

Having driven a range of E34s: 525iA, 535iA, 535im, 530iA, 540iA, 540i/6 and M5s, I can say that if a 525i is a 1 and an M5 is a 10, I can honestly say a 540i/6 feels like a 9.2. Great torque, perhaps even a bit more low end than a 3.6 M5, awesome brakes and a very tight chassis and suspension.

Even after a pissy day at work, my 540i/6 always gets me home with these... :D :D

Cheers,
Duey

It's a 10 if you hate adjusting valves. The sound of the motor is glorious.

BTW, that lower picture looks like an m62 to me.

:( Mea culpa, Tim! Having a brain freeze on finding a 60's pic...

p.s. I'm thinking of doing a trial install of a Magnaflow SS muffler on the Beast...plan is to weld it in myself in a reversible manner from the stock model...if all goes well will get sound bytes of it...he, he...

I know about the 540i V8, what I was asking for was the 540i 6 cylinders.I heared that such a car exists !! I was wondering if this was a 3.7L type or it's for real a 4.0L 6 cylinders. .... any idea guys?

Don't thinks so...for the big sixes, there was the 2.5 thru 3.5L M30, a 3.4 turbo of the M30 known as the M102, the 3.5/3.6/3.8L S38 are all I know to exist near that displacement (OEM BMW-wise).

If you ,re thiking when we write 540/6 we mean s six cylinder it aint so.We mean the M60 V8 mated to a manual 6 spd.As duey says I think the biggst std six is /was the 3.8 found in the later E34 M5
