I wondered about this too... My rear tires have 1.3mm of tread left, which is illegal, but the fronts have 2.2mm so I was going to just replace the rears before my next inspection.
How much difference in wheel speed will the computer allow before it throws an ABS fault??? I've heard that cars with stability control type systems have a much lower threshold, so need all the tyes to be replaced at the same time.

both systems use the same wheel sensors, they are not that precise that a dozen revolutions or so per mile one way or the other makes a difference

Ahhhh... Just a plot for dealers to sell more tyres. The Lexus dealer told my mum that if she didn't replace all four tyres on the LX470 the stability control would throw a fault... I guess they saw her coming haha!
