Simple iM for manual, iA for automatic - just 'shorthand' for 5 speed and automatic.

I think he was trying to pick you up.

Ha - kidding. yeah - short hand for 5-speed, so those of us with non ///M cars can at least take pride in using the same letter...

"SE" Stands for Special Equipment.
For the E32 (in the UK anyway) this means: Leather trim, auto trans, climate control. When new, the difference betwen a normal and an SE was a whopping $14K!!! However, they were never badged 'SE' and the only way of telling was looking inside, or the build sheet. For example, it would have been quite possible to spec a non-SE with climate control and electric seat adjustement on cloth seats.

The options lists was endless and it's unusual to find a 'basic' SE - An LSD, servotronic steering, remote alarm, lumbar support, electric seat adjustment etc. were all options.

The 'L' versions were stretched SE's - with 4" more rear legroom.

I also have heard of an E34 "SE" made by BMW during the 1996(?) Olympics in Atlanta. It was basically a special combination of trim and accessories, suited for comfortable taxi'ing of Olympians and officials around the Olympic Village in style and class.

Actually, I think iA does appear on the VIN plate of many automatic BMWs. I don't think I've ever seen M though.
