Steering Lock broke this weekend

Hi, on my '90 535i with 130k, I can no longer lock the steering wheel when I take the key out of the ignition. Does anyone know the fix for this or what could have possibly happened? Also, I have always been able to put the car into gear with no key in the ignition, the auto trans never locked in place without the key. Is this normal?

Probably the pin inside the lock is broken.
You can remove the ignition key lock cylinder, but it is a bit tricky. Go to my website and the to the site of Jon Evans (evansweb) there is a nice instruction with pics.
On my 88 750 E32 I can also move the gear with no key in ignition.
