the s38 is basically the same engine as the e34 m5 but i think it had some updates cos the e 34 m5 was 315 hp

Not exactly, this is the S38 B35(34?) a predecessor to the S38 B36 used in the E34 M5. I think it produces about 260Hp vs. over 300Hp for the M5.

I wonder if he missed a decimal point when entering the leakdown numbers - maybe 7% is OK for a good S38, he's mentioning 30%...

On the other hand, if he missed a decimal and really means 3.0 %, it's a very good motor.

If I"m not mistaken, this is actually the M88 engine from the E28 M5 with 284 bhp. It most certanly looks like it , it's got the old plenum.

They are expensive motors. When you have to rebuild them, have a spare 10K US available as a minimum. (it can cost you 15K )

The M88 was an older model. The S38B35 replaced it.

I think that guy is clueless, and some poor sucker actually bought that motor. I listened to the sound on the video and it didn't sound healthy.

Look at this note:

Upon getting the reading on the #4 cylinder at 50%, we put a little oil in the cylinder and did the test again, yielding no gains. I went to the back of the car and put my ear to the exhaust... nothing. I removed the air filter and opened the throttle bodies and could hear the air escaping out the intake. **this means** that the engine could use a valve adjustment, which is very common on BMWs Motorsport engines and generally are done on relatively short intervals. If you have ever owned a BMW with a euro motor (pre 1994 "M" cars) you know what I am talking about.

I wonder what his "short intervals" are. I think a valve adjustment is required around every 20K (30k Km) miles on those motors.

I know the guy that is selling this motor from some of the other car forums. He posted the same ad on there before going ebay. I don't think he'd scam the guys on the forum, he seems like an alright guy.

A lot of older M cars get negelected though as people buy them cheap and don't realize how expensive they are to maintain.

I saw that thing go up for bid once a few weeks ago. No bids last time around. Makes you wonder when the lister proves himself somewhat incompetent.
