e34 535i vs e32 735i

I saw my sister at the gas station tonight, so I told her we should go run the cars. Im thinking ya im gonna beat the 735i.... well we went to the country and both stopped we were on the cell fones, we said go and to my suprise we pulled side by side up to about 90 mph....Shouldnt the 535i be faster? We are gonna go on a better road tomarrow so we can actually get goin faster. They are both automatics.. Ive had my 535 for a month, I think im in need of a tune-up ;) Let me know what you guys think!!!!!

Wow, I'm surprised. I was seriously looking into doing an m30 swap or just buying a 535, but I guess the power I expected really isn't there. I drove an e32 735i and it's not all that quick. I thought the 535 was much faster than that?
Wow, maybe I should be looking for the 540!!

Yep, the 540i is much quicker. It's a more modern engine so has a much better BHP per litre in addition to the extra capacity. I was considering a 535i but when I seen the performance stats I wasn't impressed, very little difference to the Omega 3.0 MV6 which I was also considering but thought may be a little slow.

The BHP outputs speak volumes, 286 BHP for the 540i and around 215 IIRC for the 535i.

Hence why I got the 540i, oh and if possible get a manual! Much more fun, quicker and more fuel efficient. I can live with the effort required driving in traffic for the extra control and enjoyment on the open road.

i love the 535i. I was inquiring about the 540i, but it was a 8 grand difference, and the dealer said i would either need a co-signer or a cheaper car. I'm 21 and own 2 BMW's now, im proud of myself and the 535 has a lot of potential. I would eventually like to buy a turbo kit for it, my buddy has a bunch of turbo parts but the manifold is where the problem comes in. its expensive and im on a limited budget right now. (only one workin in household and just had a son.) After i get that turbo, 540 aint gonna be nothin :p

The M60 and the M30 are worlds apart in technology. The m30 is almost 30 years old. The M60 is a 4 valve all aluminum V8, using some pretty contemporary technology. I personally like the 6 cylinder in the 535i - makes for a very balanced car and is fun to drive - v8's for some reason seem nose heavy when I drive them.

I thought this was all about his sister having a little more balls, since he is still at such an early age. :D Be safe and take your time in learning the limits of your car. Attend a BMW CCA driving school in your area if available.
These cars are about capability and not always power. If it was all about pure speed, I'd borrow Jr's M5 and connect a bottle in the trunk :p

lol yea, who knows i dont see why i dont beat the 735 but then again i havent had the chance (well money) to get any upgrades yet, but my time will come, with the perf. chip and hopefully the diff. soon i should have no problem beating it. :p

I owned a 735iL for six years and have driven a number of 535i's. There is about a 200 lbs or so weight difference between the cars depending on trim levels. They are both fairly heavy cars. As Winfred correctly stated there may be a rear end ratio difference but may also be a state of engine tune difference. My E-32 ran real strong...pulled hard especially after rebuilding the engine. The new owner the night he came out to buy it after warming up the car by some high speed cruising...we turned around off the freeway and I suggested he gun the car on a favorite on-ramp I know back onto I-94. He couldn't believe how quick the car was and he owned another identical E-32 with the same gear. If both cars are in the same tune however, the 535i should win but I have seen a lot of M-30's out there that didn't run as good as they should.

Your '89 535i probably has the 3.91 differential. The 735i likely might have the 4.27 diff. Winfred knows how much quicker the 4.27 makes a 535iA, could be the next thing to consider switching out...Say, you could secretely switch diffs with your sister sometime (if you know hers is the 4.27), then ask her to race again.

Lol i wish i could "secretly swap them", i plan on the 4.27 sometime in the near future. The 735i does have a very strong running engine, lots of power behind her, i think i just need a tune-up (and a diff.) and id beat the car. Theres also alot of little hondas and wrx's around here, id love to race them but i dont want to look like a fool, just yet :D

after a 30 roll or so, the diff's don't matter that much. The 735i had a 4.27 beginning in either late '90 or model year 1991.
Engine tune has a lot to do with how well any car runs. I have seen totally mis-matched cars race and the smaller displacement car win because it was highly tuned.
