If you can avoid driving the car, do so and try to find out why the car is over heating.
If you need the vehicle for commuting etc, I would turn my heaters on full blast, and make sure they are on the hottest setting. Thus removing some of the heat from under the bonet. Make sure you have plently of water handy and ensure that your water levels are kept to the correct levels.
Also I would make sure I had my AA phone number handy, so they can take me and the car home safely :)
If your car is over heating, post more information and im sure someone on here will be able to help you, or at least point you in the right direction.

Shut it off immediately and dont start it unti you find the cause for the overheating.

Actually keep the AC on high as you have an auxiliary fan for the ac and you will be pulling more air through the radiator
Also wait until it cools and refill the overfill bottle. ( you can speed up the cooling process by using the bleed screw on the thermostat housing if you have a 535)
ANd your AAA card of course

running the car is almost a guarantee of a blown headgasket and cracked head, go fo it.
1. Shut it down
2. Find out why it's overheating
3. Fix it
4. Remember - parts and labor are far cheaper than a motor or head swap
Check your VIN for recalls - you might have one of the E34's that had a known issue with the thermostat which caused overheating.

I should clarify , keep the car AC on HIGH until you can pull over safely THEN shut her down and do the above. Your dash will have alarms going off and you would have to be on pills not to notice your problem

AAA I'll have to get it. Last time I had to push the car 1/2 mile and then look for a place to sleep. Luckylly for me there are some good folks down in CT.

1) Pull over and shut off engine.
2) Call towing service.
3) Have car towed to bank, withdraw $1,500 USD ($226,000 CDN).
4) Have car towed to shop, leave car and cash.
5) Go home and wait two weeks.
This would sound funny if it hadn't happened to me... ;-)
