My brother & I just did mine today on my 1989 E34 525i. You need to pull that assembly out by disconnecting the red and blue cables and the connector on the right side. Once out carefully open this assembly up and the bulb is on the inside.
Hey guys,
I have the holder for the radio, OBC, and vent/heat/a/c control out due to a satellite radio install I'm doing. And by chance the bulb or bubls that light up the blower and temp knobs have gone out a few days ago for me. So since I'm in there I thought I'd replace them, but it's real tight since the cables hooked up to the OBC and heating stuff are pretty tight, plus I don't see any bulbs out in the open there just a lot of white plastic.
Any tips on doing this from anyone?

bring the bulb with you to the stealer or you'll end up with the wrong one...
here was my burned out one
It does not have the black connector cradle that the obc bulbs have, and that's the one they'll give you if you don't bring this one with you.
don't ask me why I know that
