pressure changes in your cooling system (like topping off antifreeze a little too much) can cause other parts to pop/leak. it doesn't make sense that increasing the volume of your cooling system would make it pop, as opposed to decreasing it (bypassing heater core), but a system part change can do that, and im guessing that's what happened in your situation.
i replaced the one in my 325e & after the heater core it should be quite simple.
