What are you doing with the 530i ?
-Artem
It's about time to retire my 1994 530ia (204,000 miles) and I would like to buy a slightly used 540i. I think something between 2000 - 2004 with less than 50,000 miles is what I'm looking for. I might be willing to go with a 530i if the price is right.
Are there any cars/problems to look out for? I bought my 94 before knowing about the Nikasil issue, and I don't want to repete that mess again.
Thanks for the help!

Benedict Arnold. A lot of us can afford to buy an E39 but we stick with the E34. Why you ask? The E34 is better looking, more fun to drive, and more fun to work on. You should stick your head in a sink full of ice and water... it might clear up your thinking... and you might just buy a superfly E34 540.

Well said, and I fully agree. My parents own an e39 and they like the styling of my e34 much more, the lines of the e34 are classic and the car gets looks everywhere. I would take an e34 over an e39 any day.Originally Posted by Evan
If you want 540i dont' buy e34. Constatnt issues from minor ones like windsield washer tank (that I have to change again) to suspendsion, engine, transmission. It's not the money but the frustration. E39 is supposedly much better in reliability but admitedly not as sharp as e34.

The E34 is a classic!!!
E34 FTW!!
Gone but NEVER forgotten. :'(
And then...
I like the E34 alo too. I've has one for a long time. The carbon buildup issue sounds like something to worry about. Whatever happened to those "bullet proof" cars that the Germans used to build?
I'll be selling my 530i in a few months. I'll post here when I do, just in case someone is interested.

2003 540i sport is one fine car. It has many of the m5 goodies such as the same struts, 18" m-parallel wheels, M front spoiler/bumper, m three-spoke steering wheel etc.
Also check Bimmer mag they had an e39 buyers guide in 2005.
