How many wires go to alternator on '92 525i?

I am trying to figure out if I am having a voltage fluctuation problem with my aftermarket engine control unit. Is there a small wire that goes from the alternator to something else, such as the charging indicator light on the dash?

Are there 2 or 3 wires?

Yeah I have a problem with MS seeing voltage somehow when I remove the key - one of the MS guys suggested removing the "thin wire" from the alternator...
