M50 is Dual cam. Search for pictures of both, the intakes and engine covers will be a dead givaway for a difference.
Hi all,
I am going to buy my 2nd BMW, a 92 525i in California (my first BMW was a 320i). Carfax report shows the 92 525i has a 2.5L SOHC engine. Does that mean it has the M20 168hp engine? I search the internet. Some websites say 92 525i has the M50 189hp engine. I am confused.
Thanks,
David

I borrow a pic from ebay. The 92 525i engine looks like the pic below. It looks like thec in 93-95 525i, but carfax says it's a "2.5L I-6 EFI SOHC".

'89 and '90 cars 525i's were M20's. '91 and up were M50's. Definitely looks like an M50 to me![]()

Thanks. That means the Carfax report is WRONG. May be I should report this error to Carfax.Originally Posted by SC David
Hey guy's, I've found that Carfax is wrong on a lot of issues. They only gather info that has been reported and if it wasn't reported correctly or not at all, it won't be on the Carfax report.Originally Posted by bigtisas
I ran two carfax reports on two of my vehicles that I know the complete histories on and both came up extremely wrong!!! I complained to them and got a complete refund.
