never heard of this on a v8, but I assume it is possible.

My ignition timing is retarded by 50 degrees and we're trying to figure out why.

Ouch!!!
No wonder the bugger wouldnt start.
So does anyone know how to fix the ignition timing?
Zac
I think that you may have pushed the little woodruff key back into the crank. and you have your crank pulley on incorrectly (thats saying if the crank pully sensor gear is the same or close to an M50).
Hmm, I wonder how we managed to do that? How do I fix this?
Zac
did you pull the harmonic balancer during this project?

You'd have take off the serpentine belts, and pulleys on the crank. Then look for the pin that is sticking out.Originally Posted by 92E34

LOL everything about this dudes car is so vague the pros are afraid to even comment on it. Did he even take this apart? I am convinced at 2 things, the head gaskets dont blow and 2' if in doubt replace the whole engine.

I don't understand what your asking. As I stated earlier I'm new to BMWs, but familiar with other cars. First let's talk about the mechanical portion. We got the crankshaft and the cams. Physically linked together in the right positions using marks on the crankshaft and the cams. If you got all four cams and the crankshafts aligned in the right positions then intake and exhaust valves are doing their dance properly.
Fuel and ignition are handled in the M60 by the computers. Assuming the cams and crank are in proper alignment, if the plugs aren't firing at the proper time, then you've got an electrical problem - wiring, sensors or computer. I suppose you could have bad coils or plugs as well, but I think you've covered that.
