news out here stated that scam artists are writing down gift card numbers in stores and waiting for them to be purchased and using the card to buy on line. Clever clever...

Yeah, we need to hide ours at my work, they are just sitting on the counter and I wouldn't be surprised that people would try to scam where I work, it's a 'high value target' for sure.

...I wonder how they watch the cards to see if they've been bought.

The last ones that I've had required you to scratch off the silver on back to reveal the number. I guess checking to see if they were scratched off is too much effort?
