Default My latest fuel consumption figures since rebuilding the cyl. head

Well last week I went down to N. Wales, England and got an amazing 30.6 mpg - Excellent! Last time I did the same run I did a similar mileage but used a lot more fuel, only reaching 26.3 mpg. Here is the fuel calculator that I used:- http://www.pug306.net/mpg.php The numbers I fed in were 667 miles/ £90 of petrol at 90.9p ltr and the previous trip was the same mileage and fuel price but with £105 of fuel used. Here's the proof that a good, well adjusted cylinder head makes a huge difference to mpg.

Hah yeah - too many cans of lager I think. Correct, Wales is in the UK. I should have typed N. Wales FROM England!

Thanks for pointing out my cock-up LOL!

Hey Shawn, hows it goin? Beautiful day in Thunder Bay

From what I can tell, you've provided us her Majesty the Queen's units of measure. So, if:

1 Imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallon, then your 30.6 Imperial mpg would be 25.5 US mpg or 9.2 L/100km.

I don't intend to bring you down, but, unless I've got my facts wrong, or your British Highways are 'stop and go', I'd expect a bit better mileage from the 2.0l.

For comparison, my M50 usually does ~33.6 Imperial mpg (8.4L/100km) to ~37 Imperial mpg (7.6L/100km) on pure highway roadtrips. Mind you, you can drive upo to 18 hours on our highways without seeing a stoplight.

What he said. How fast are you going? On a long trip cruising I can get 32-33 miles per US gallon at 65-70mph, even better if you can stand to drive 55mph.

Hiya Dave - Oh everythings great thanks mate! Those figures are Her Majesty's units, and it shows that my car is still crap on fuel, but not as crap as it was. However, there are some factors to consider here:-

The car's boot was v. heavily loaded - big heavy toolbox, spare battery, snowchains, a large suitcase, two big holdalls full of clothes, kid's toys, etc. This made the back end sit really low down, me & Nichola in the front and my 2yr old mini me in the back.

I did maybe 360 miles of motorway cruising at not-very-steady-due-to-heavy-traffic 80 mph, and some 50 mph speed restrictions at road works

The roads I drove around in N. Wales are severely steep hills, mountain passes, nasty road junctions - you get my drift? They were roads more suitable for 4x4's, rather than e34's. It's when you realise that the econometer should have been calibrated to gallons per mile, as the needle spent a bit too much time 'off the scale' at 0 MPG.
For comparison, before I had the E34 I had a 1995 Ford Mondeo 1.8 turbo diesel. It done the same journey, with similar mileage and a slighly higher fuel cost per litre, for £44 of diesel. But what a horrible car that was LOL!

Shaun, don't feel bad, 30MPG in what would have been 4300-4000lbs of car with you and your gear still isn't that bad. Dave was telling you his 'downhill' mileage... Like you said, at least you have significantly improved your mileage and have a better running car for the efforts. FWIW, though, I'll get 30-31MPG(Imp) at 65mph too if I drive like my grandmother....that's why I get only 26 or 27 mpg...the highways I'm on now have some really nice twisties and it would be a shame never to play with the stick on these roads!

    Cheers,

That'll do it. Like you said, the important thing is you've made an improvement.

And Duey's right, I let my grandma drive quite a bit

Still 25 mpg US is great. I'd trade that in for my 16.

16 mpg? Yowch! I'm really happy with getting 30mpg here. I put this 'new' head on before Christmas & the difference was incredible - hunting idle-gone, rattly valves-gone, big flat spot-gone, smoky exhaust-gone, and the increase in fuel economy is the icing on the cake for me. I've spent a lot of time and money on this car over the years but what the hell....to me it's great. LONG LIVE OUR E34's!

    Cheers,

    Shaun M
