Default Ah, patience grasshopper. Got the complete e23 turbo setup.

A good nite's rest convinced me to go back to U-Pull-It & try again. The only snag yesterday was a single exhaust manifold nut that was blocked & no access to get it off without butchering it except for with a hacksaw. Went back today with a hacksaw & was able to cut it off, sacraficing only one of the studs. Had to stop mid-way & go out for some more blades. I went thru 4 bi-metal blades to finally get thru. Also had to butcher the wheel well with a sledge & chisel to make room for the wastegate to clear which was frozen solid to the manifold. I learned that PB Blaster makes for a good cutting fluid & liberal amounts helped hacksaw thru the stud much faster. I only had room to cut thru a hardened washer edgewise to cut the stud off. Otherwise I would have had to butcher the manifold or wastegate casting.

Got the ENTIRE setup for $115, will have to send the turbo out to be rebuilt since it lunched the exhaust impeller. I was able to get EVERYTHING! This was from a completely unmolested grey market 82 e23 745i:

    - turbo
    - entire intake plumbing including air cleaner housing & intake snorkel
    - intercooler & plumbing
    - wastegate
    - exhaust manifold & studs (longer)
    - exhaust downtubes
    - complete wiring harness (never know)
    - DME (never know)
    - heat shields
    - cooling ducts
    - lots of misc.

There's even a blower motor in front of the oil cooler that ducts air from below the dam to the turbo, prolly runs for a token few minutes after shut down?

I'm psych'd. At first I thought I'd just get it to resell on ebay, but this is going on my 7 now. Gonna have the e32 745i that BMW never built, with a stick to boot

pic's of the booty to follow

    Cheers!

I don't know if you visit mye28.com, but if you're looking to sink some more money into the project, TCD has made a wastegate for it and are now offering a 60 trim wheel for the turbo.

That's great Don! You'll have to let me help out.

BTW - got the head back from Statkus Engines. They seemed to really know their stuff and it came out well so far - now I have to get some time to work on it.

We'll have to go visit your welder friends sometime. I'm ready to get that flange welded up to the m5 headers too. You free for lunch this week?

CleverTD, Thanks for the links, great info to have on hand. Robin, just let me know when you're free for lunch. Haven't been
to Frontier in almost a month nor to Modelo's in a coons-age.

    Here's a few pic's of my "booty":

Decided to snag the alternator for an extra $15, took it off to get to the wire harness connectors.
Looked like it had been freshly rebuilt. Also grabbed the tiny washer pump & reservoir so I can remove mine to
    make room for the intercooler.

Yikes!!! Now that's the go. Perhaps consider a Megasquirt tho, the ECU is a retrograde step and it enables you to get rid of the AFM and 10PSI limit. Esp. cool if you 'soup up' the K27 with a 60mm wheel. I'd just a chance to have a go with that stuff... am very, very, jealous Don, this will be an unbelievable project to cmplete. ick

    No longer the case

Great job. I read your previous post and felt a bit let down myself that you weren't able to collect all the bits. I remember tring to pull parts off of a chevy truck sitting in a giant mud puddle with copious amounts of boreal forest mosquitos and black flies picking at my bones. Had to scrounge the driest floor mats I could find from other vehicles to lay on. Not a fun endeavour.

    I'll be watching your progress.

Wow, the exhaust manifold is so small. It's almost too small. I guess BMW knew what they were doing... but dam that thing is tiny.
