ECE spec 525i exhaust note?

I have a 1991 525i ECE spec car here that the exhaust seems a bit loud on. I was wondering if they were made that way or if the muffler or resonator is burnt out? The exhaust system is stock and appears to be in good condition on the outside anyway.

i dunno if it was made like that but mine and my friends 535 is like that a bit loud

I have a 535i as well and it seems much quieter but it is also beter insulated then 525i's

Dont know what ECE is but my '92 is loud too. Sounds a bit like there is a hole in the back box. It got standard system though from new its never had a cat fitted

My M50 ECE can be quite loud. Doesn't ECE have slightly higher compression?

I put a genuine BMW twin pipe system on my car, taken from a 1990 525 sport (M20), and the rear silencer is a little noisier than my friends' stock M50B20 exhaust. Personally I like the extra couple of dB's and it's not loud enough to offend anyone. I probably should buy a new exhaust but it's in great structural condition so I can't justify removing it just yet!

whats ECE?

If I'm not mistaken it's just the saleszone designation for the European models. I'm not sure if the 525i had different compression ratio's or cat changes per zone. If power is slightly higher > slightly more compression. It's similar to the story of M5's being limited to a powered-down version for the US compared to Europe. I have no understanding of the how and why though.

My car is an ECE version. It has no cat and no O2 sensor circuit fitted.
