    94 540i.
have noticed lately that as i occasionly leave the car it locks itself.

today wife got out of the car with the keys still in the ignition and as she closed the drivers door it locked itself.the local roadservice broke into it
    to get us going again.

how to i fix / where to start

I beleive the loom on the boot hinge can be a common cause for central locking problems. The wires can get damaged with continual opening and closing of the boot, its possible there could be a short if some of the wires are damaged
