I have read many thing about this issue with the 540's. Mine started doing this about a week ago. It has been getting worse and worse so I went outside to check it out today. I couldn't find any vacuum leaks, so I pulled off the engine cover to look at what is under it. What I found was one injector that looked like it wasn't fully seated. I loosed up the fuel rail and used a piece of wood and small mallet and tapped it. POP all is better now. I am saying this because i don't think I have ever seen it as a cause and wanted to share what I found to be my issue at least.
