Is it really necesary to replace the drier after I change the evaporator and expansion valve? While searching, I've seen some say that you have to replace it every time you open up the system. Any thoughts?

It is recommended... but lots of people I know don't. Especially when your vacuum the system before refilling it.
when changing a major component i strongly recomend a new drier, but not when the system is only open a few minutes to change a o-ring
