Check the wires first, if you cannot see anything wrong, remove the speed sensor and check that one.
Sometimes just cleaning helps.

Yestarday when pulling away from a light in heavy traffic, twice the speedometer just shoots up to 40-80 mph. Then it goes back to normal once I pick up some speed (only occurs when I am starting from dead stop). It doesn't happen each time, occured only twice yestarday.

No, that kind of speedometer error usually occurs only on empty parking lots with a heavy foot-no snow here. =]
Just glad to find out that this is not caused by my instrument cluster.
