I too am puzzled by a similar problem ... except its the right hand reversing light bulb only ... otherwise exacly same comment ... anyone out there know a solution ?
i'm new to this site and it is awesome. I can find all my answers to everything I have needed so far!
My problem my daughter's 88 528e has had a problem with her brake light going out. We have switched the bulb sockets, bent them also to get a good connection...and nothing works...When i switch the bulb into another socket...it works fine but any one i put in the (right) brake light won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions for a novice?? Thanks for your help...

you may see that left and right bulbs are feed trough "Rear lights check relay", but in different pads, one coil for each bulb. Guess you should have a bad relay contact/soldering point/coil and you may fix/diagnose it following procedures suggested by Shogun. Also posted is a picture that should help you find and remove the relay.

Edit: Pictures in these links, as they are missing somwere.

Forgot something: have you checked if there is power arriving there? Simple multimeter will do.
Apparently there are some wire looms breaking where they go from the trunk into the passenger room.
Thank you very much...I will give this a try and let you know how it turns out...I appreciate your help..Originally Posted by shogun

by LKM (E34) nor Check relays (E28). If one bulb is not turning on, and it is not the bulb, check the wiring and connections, not only from the battery but also to ground. Being the other side OK, all checks should be confined to the trunk.
