I actually think my M5 mirrors are louder than the old ones. But its been quite some time so I'm not 100% sure. And they are BMW mirrors, not aftermarket.
Apart from obvious road noise like tyres, the E34 is considered fairly aerodynamic & relatively well soundproofed, however I was wondering how noisy the stock external mirrors are at speed. Has anyone been able to determine if the M5 mirrors (being more aerodynamic) are quieter? I'm thinking some of the noise I'm hearing is actually wind noise coming from the mirrors themselves. To prove a point stick your hand out of the window at 120kmh+ (70mph+) and hear the sound it makes!

my mirrors have little dimples on the window side to help eliminate wind noise, when I got the car these things really baffled my mind...why would they leave these stupid bumps there? LOL

Jeff B,
Could you pls. show us pics of your mirrors with the little bumps?
Those bumps may be turbulators, designed to make little vortices which change the downstream airflow, thereby reducing noise. I'm very curious about anything that reduces noise.
